Carbon Financing Platform

PROJECT – What started as WE3 contract on strategy and storytelling at a very early stage of Kumo became a long term collaboration based on intuition and a positive gut feel. Initially envisioned to develop on blockchain technologies tokenising carbon credits of project developers used as collateral to finance and scale their impact, Kumo was early to convince institutional capital providers of the benefits within a high-risk industry. Today, the start-up has grown to 10+ people developing software within tradFi to build the next trillion dollar market as carbon represents a high-potential asset class, but remains unbanked collateral. Kumo onboards and assesses project developer to match their financing needs with institutional debt capital.

The entire product design has been conceived carefully trying to not overdo the formalistic guise of the experience, rather start from a blank page of paper and subtly evolve UI components from feature to feature within defined foundational boundaries.

ONBOARDING & ASSESSMENT – Assessing the financeability of project developer requires a multi-step onboarding process in which several layer of information define solvency and generate an initial loan model that simulates the requested project financing.

PORTFOLIO – Projects deemed financeable can be then offered in a simple portfolio view showcasing debt finance related metrics at a glance as well unfold entire projects inside a detailed view.

PROJECT DETAIL – A project is described first and foremost by its loan profile – the ask as well as the collateral it can back the loan with. For most projects contracted off-take agreements are used as collateral. The platform will further disclose carbon credit data including whether the project is issuing and retiring credits already and provide all company, financials and historic sales data necessary for capital provider to be able evaluate an investment.

ANALYTICS – The entire portfolio can be analysed across regions and base metrics. Kumo's proprietary data is extended by public datasets where it makes sense to allow for overview, comparison against index and individual projects.

MONITORING – Logically every financed project needs to report status and progress over the time of the loan tenor in order to comply with agreed terms. Monitoring projects across the various carbon project types is a complex undertaking including many risks at stake. Kumo decided to start on with biochar due to its relatively well-structured method and manageable risk profile.
